Etching Definition Chemistry

Etching is a very precise process and involves the use of chemicals to remove material to create accurate and excellent metal parts. Usually, a client has an idea of what they want their design to be. They have specific dimensions they want the etching company to follow as well as the volume and material they wish to be used. This is where etching comes into play. Etching will remove a lot of unwanted material while also making precise parts for clients.

There are a lot of things naked to the human eye. This isn’t good because it makes it harder to detect potential issues. In order to detect these issues, we use UV lights. UV lights can make things like deterioration visible to us which is extremely important in architecture. You wouldn’t want to walk inside a building that’s made up of poor quality parts.

In etching, the sheets will be cleansed and then use heated rollers to apply UV photosensitive resist to both sides of the metal sheet. After this is completed, the artwork design is applied and then the metal sheets and artwork go under a UV which will make the metal harden leaving only the artwork.

Next, the sheets go through some chemicals again which will only affect the parts of the sheets that aren’t protected by the UV photoresist. Ferric Chloride is the chemical that is used the most during this process. All that is left is to remove the photo from the sheets and now you have the profile etched into the metal and a high-quality part. Obviously, technology isn’t perfect so usually, after the process is finished, workers will take a look at the part to make sure everything turned out how it was supposed to.

All this takes place within a few days. It’s much faster than a lot of other manufacturing processes which can take weeks or months. Another benefit is that it’s more cost-efficient. This is why etching is one of the most popular methods used today. Not to mention there is more flexibility when it comes to designs. Etching allows companies to create designs that are extremely complex because it makes the whole process easier which is why there is more flexibility. Even though there’s a lot of precision involved, etching makes it possible to create all types of designs that are high in quality and look just how the client wanted their idea to look in a short amount of time.
